Filí na Máighe (meaning the “Poets of the Maigue”) were a celebrated circle of 18th-century Gaelic poets who lived along the River Maigue in County Limerick, most notably around the town of Croom. Famous for their quick-witted, satirical, and melodic Irish compositions, they are best known for writing sardonic, quick-witted verse in the format that would later popularize the modern limerick.
The circle was primarily led by two central figures:
Seán Ó Tuama: A tavern owner in Croom whose pub served as the central gathering place for the poets.
Aindrias Mac Craith (An Mangaire Súgach): A schoolteacher and traveling poet known for his rebellious and highly satirical verses.
Together, they held legendary poetic courts, engaged in witty verse-duels (comhfhreagarthas), and wrote on topics ranging from romance and local squabbles to politics and local folklore.
Their work was famously compiled and published in 1906 by the renowned Irish scholar Father Patrick Dinneen in the book Filidhe na Máighe. The translations of their work helped solidify their legacy in Irish literary history.
