Short closed tears to the two maps in the back. Small paper loss to Paris map – none affecting actual maps. Overall a very nice, bright, complete and clean copy of this rare publication. From the Preface: ‘It may seem a strange principle to enunciate as the very first requirement in a Hospital that it should do the sick no harm. It is quite necessary, nevertheless, to lay down such a principle, because the actual mortality in hospitals…is very much higher than any calculation founded on the mortality of the same class of diseases among patients treated out of hospital would lead us to expect. [ ] In order to spread a knowledge of the progress already made, as well as of those principles which may now be considered as established, I have been asked to prepare the present [third] edition. In doing this, it has been necessary to re-write nearly the whole of it, and to make so many additions to the matter that it is in reality a new book. F.N.’
