With a frontispiece, Vignettes and 28 folding plates. Later brown calf with gilt line decorations and label on spine. Raised bands. Later end papers. Very good condition. Binding seriouly rubbed and bumped. Material losses and signs of animal activity. Edges age darkened. Text block in very good condition, but pages 289 to 306 absent. Folding plates complete and in very good condition, except plate 26, which shows a 5 cm closed tear. Text block age darkened with ocassional mild foxing. Two old signatures, one scratched out and dated 1766.

Other maps with small tears and poor folding. Sound binding. Internally clean.

Age darkened and dust dulled. Some evidence of old bookworm. Bindings of text blocks sound. One plate lose. Portrait of Abbe Raynal and one map (East Indies) missing. Overall good reading copies or candidates for rebinding.

Third Edition & Supplement to 3rd Edition. Three volumes of four. [Edinburgh], [Privately published by Andrew Bell, Archibald Constable & Colin Macfarquhar], [1788 – 1803]. c. 26 x 20 cm. Vol.1: Plates 1 – 161 / Vol. 3: Plates 292 – 446 / Vol. 4: Plates 447 – 542 and 1 – 50. See comments below for noted ‘anomalies’. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Red spine labels with gilt title. Gilt decorations and volume numbers in gilt. Very good condition. Bindings rubbed and bumped with wear to spine and ends and corners (see images). Edges age darkened. Joints cracked, but bindings remain sound. Spine leather dried and cracked. Internally dust dulled, but generally clean. A few closed tears and some edge wear to some plates. Overall a very nice collection of more than 450 plates. See images.

Scarce and early pirated edition. Dublin, Printed for L. White, P. Byrne, J. Moore, J. Jones, B. Dornin, Grueber and M’Allister. W. Jones, and R. White. 1790. 22 x 13.5 cm. vii, (1), 144 pages. [[A]4, B8-K8]. Watermarked Paper. Contemporary cloth. Rough cut edges. Condition: Binding seriously rubbed, bumped, (damp) stained and faded (see images). Front joint open at the top of spine. Front free end paper and large part of half title page missing. Large part (c. 80%) of leaf D8 (pages 47 & 48) missing (a facsimile page printed on archival photo paper is losely inserted). Top section of the book damp stained. Edges dust dulled. Some minor nicks, tears & creases). Name of previous owner in colour pencil on ‘Advertisement’ page. Otherwise internally clean. The book would benefit greatly from rebinding. Despite its faults it remains a fascinating copy and a terrific read.

Full calf. Contemporary boards, later rebacked in a matching style with new leather spine. Very good condition. Binding rubbed and bumped. Age darkened throughout. Occassional mild foxing. lacks front free end paper, folded plate and map. Name of previous owner neatly inscribed on title page. A few nicks, dog ears and closed tears. Internally clean. A nice little book with some striking illustrations of Polar Bear (‘White Bear’), Shooting Sea Horses, Manner of Travelling in Kamchatka and others.
