Marcelle Bernstein, a former features writer for the Observer newspaper, spent four years interviewing 500 nuns in her research for this book. She concentrated principally on the Anglican and Roman Catholic orders in England and America. She explores women’s reasons for entering or leaving convents, the training and intiation processes, the question of celibacy, the effects of the modern world on the cloister, and the issue of falling vocations and how the orders are reacting to this.
