With a losely inserted handwritten letter by Dr. E.M. Hummel to ‘Miss Allen, Bray, Ireland’, the daughter of the translator Thomas Taylor Allen. Original dark blue cloth. Gilt titles on spines and front boards. Top edges gilt. Fore edges deckle. Very good condition. Some shelf wear, rubbing and bumping. Edges and end papers age darkened. Volume 1 with some inscriptions, possibly by the Author?

Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de La Motte Guyon (commonly known as Madame Guyon) (1648 – 1717) was a French Christian accused of advocating Quietism, which was considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church. Madame Guyon was imprisoned from 1695 to 1703 after publishing the book A Short and Very Easy Method of Prayer.

Thomas Taylor Allen was born 8 Aug 1837. He was a magistrate and collector in the Bengal Civil Service until his retirement in 1894. He died in Co. Wicklow, Ireland on 1 Apr 1927.
