Leather spine with gilt title and decorations. Marbled end papers. Very good condition. Some shelf wear: Edges and Corners rubbed and bumped. Boards rubbed and partially faded. Ex Library. Some glue stains on boards and end papers. Paper glued to front paste down (Markree Library). Name of University (Univ.Coll.N.Staffs) embossed on the bottom of the title page (small and neat). Some foxing. Pages and edges age darkened. Top edge gilt. Front edge deckle.

When the Irish artist and antiquarian George Petrie (1790-1866) died, this illustrated two-volume collection of almost 300 Irish-language inscriptions was edited by the archaeologist Margaret Stokes (1832-1900) and published in 1872-8. Each inscription is accompanied by notes on its subject, date, script, decoration and linguistic features.

NOTE: This is not the 2015 reprint by the Cambridge University Press, but the first edition of volume 1, published in 1872.
