A series of essays- ‘a symphonic meditation,’ to use the author’s words- arranged under the following titles: Religion, The United States, War, Europe, Russia, The Jews, Education, Science, Sex, The Author at Sixty. The autobiographical note inherent in the subtitle carries through all of these essays. Written with characteristic wit and style, the author presents his often controversial opinions and illuminates these pieces with passages of autobiography. Most of the material in the book, including the last two essays, has not been published before.

Edmund Wilson is the editor of ‘The Shock of Recognition’ and the author of ‘Five Plays, The Shores of Light’ and ‘The Scrolls from the Dead Sea’.
