Contemporary vellum with gilt title on spine. Red speckled edges. Very good condition. Complete. Sound binding. Externally worn, age darkened and stained. Edges age darkened. Spine title faded and worn. Internally age darkened with occassional mild foxing and browning. Damp staining to top edges of some pages. Long gift inscription in ink on preliminary illustration page (see image). Still and impressive copy.

Clement XI (Giovanni Francesco Albani) was pope from 1700 up until his death in 1722. He was a patron of the arts and sciences and was also a benefactor of the Vatican Library. ‘Homiliae in Euangelia’ is a memorial work, published in the year of the pope’s death 1722. It consists of twenty-eight Homilies given by Clement XI between 1701 (Homily 1) and 1717 (Homily 28). This work was edited by the Pope’s nephew, Italian Cardinal Annibale Albani. Pope Clement XI appointed Albani (1682-1751) as the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina in 1711.
The gift inscription appears to be from Fr. Patrick Francis Doyle (1916-1981) former missionary of the Society of Missionaries in Africa (SMA) to Fr. Patrick Moran, former Headmaster of the Augustine’s College in Dungarvan, County Waterford. [Since the inscription is in Latin this could be wrong].
