[Schubert, Franz] Wheeler, Opal / Deucher, Sybil. Franz Schubert and his Merry Friends. Illustrated by Mary Greenwalt. London, Faber and Faber Limited, 1960, 24.4cm x 19cm. 120 pages. With illustrations and music sheets. Original Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition with only minor signs of external wear along with staining on some of the first couple of pages. Short synopsis: This book is about the brilliant young Schubert and his pranks and escapades with his merry friends. One of the most interesting stories in the book is the new light shed on the history of the Unfinished Symphony. It remained unfinished, not because of poverty, illness and discouragement, or because of the author’s death. The real reason, according to the authors, was that Schuber’s friends were starting for a picnic just as he was in the middle of his Symphony and he could not resist joining them. Before he left, he stuffed the partly written score in his desk and it was never taken out again!
