A novel of travel/ performed by a common man of a journey across the American continent, overland and on foot, accompanied by a horse, wagon, cow and dog/ crossing unabridged rivers, prospect of violence from the beasts of the forest/ the Indians/ continuous narrative/ conversations with thos he came in contact with while on his journey and whom he stopped with overnight/ as his journey drew to a close and he came into the more civilized states, he was every where welcomed and the people flocked around him in curiosity/ considered by some as the work of a monomaniac/ Johnson was American by birth, lived in Connecticut (Woodstock) and Oxford South Gore/ Inhabitant of Webster, incorporated as a town in 1832/ He enlisted in the 21st Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers in 1832/ In 1864 he re-enlisted in the First Brigade Band, of the First Division of the 20th Army Corps, being with General Sherman in his march from Atlanta to the Sea/ he left Sherman’s Army at Fayetteville, N.C., and went into hospital at New York for treatment/ for his disability incurred in the army, he has since received a small pension/ he went to California in 1880 at the invitation of friends and relatives, but eventually returned to Massachusetts by railroad/ this volume is dedicated to all who helped him on his journey/ Eureka to San Francisco/ San Jose/ Sacramento/ Reno, Nevada/ Battle Mountain, Wells/ Ogden in Utah/ Laramie, Wyoming/ Cheyenne/ Omaha, Nebraska/ Des Moines/ Davenport/ Cleveland, Ohio/ Buffalo/ Albany/ Marlow/ New Hampshire/ Webster/ Lynn etc.
