Vol.1: xii, 436 pages, w/ 7 Maps incl.1 folding & 35 Plates / Vol.2: viii, 468 pages, w/ 4 Maps and 35 Plates / Vol.3: viii, 512 pages, w/ 7 Maps & 35 Plates. Total of 105 Plates and 18 hand coloured Maps plus hundreds of Illustrations in text. Contemporary green Morrocco with gilt decorations and title to boards and spine. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers. Very good condition. Bindings rubbed and bumped. Edges and end papers dust dulled. Name of previous owner in all three volumes in ink (dated 1883). Hinges in volume 1 cracked. Inscription on verso of front free end paper of volume 1 scratched out. Occassional mild foxing. Internally clean. A nice set. ‘Ireland. Its Scenery, Character etc.’ was published first in weekly parts and later as a three volume set by How and Parsons in 1843. A German translation ‘Skizzen aus Irland’ appeared in 1850 and a new edition with additional materials, ‘Halls Ireland’ was published by George Vitrue in 1853. Mr. Hall was editor of the ‘Art Union Monthly Journal’ (re-named ‘The Art Journal’ in 1849) from 1839 till his retirement in 1880, and that magazine was frequently the first place for publication for his wife’s Irish stories. Mrs. Hall was born Anna Maria Fielding in Dublin in 1800. Her father died shortly after her birth and she was brought up in Grange, County Waterford. In 1815 she moved to London, where she met Mr. Hall, whom she married in 1824.
