Dudley Pope meticulously researches the story of the bloodiest mutiny in the history of the Royal Navy – the butchering of the officers aboard His Majesty’s Frigate Hermione, in the West Indies in 1797. The author describes these events which end with the daring recapture of the Hermione under the guns of Spanish forts, with Captain Edward Hamilton leading 100 English sailors in six open boats in one of the most brilliant cutting-out expeditions in naval history.

Widely recognised as a leading naval historian, Dudley Pope was naval correspondent for the London Evening News. He was prompted to write this book by the realisation that the worst mutiny ever to occur in the Royal Navy had been largely ignored in the naval histories. This led him to dig out “piles of papers, thickly covered in dust”, at the British Admiralty archives and the Spanish naval archives. He found dozens of original Admiralty documents, including letters from Captain Pigot and the court martial reports of the 20-odd mutineers. [Adapted from publisher’s note]
