Vol.1: vii, 636 pages, FP & 15 Plates / Vol.2: vii, 636 pages, 13 Plates / Vol.3: viii, 628 pages, 12 Plates / Vol.4: vii, 632 pages, 15 Plates. Complete. Uniform later black half leather over marbled boards. Raised bands. Very good condition. Bindings rubbed and bumped. Gilt titles on spine faded out. Some spotting, mainly to end papers and adjoining pages. Edges and end papers age darkened. Tipped in paper slip (auction catalogue entry?) about Bentley’s Miscellany. Internally clean. Plates age darkened from the edges, some spotting. Overall a very nice set in a sturdy binding. Charles Dickens worked as the Editor of Bentley’s Miscellany between 1836 and 1839. Oliver Twist, one of Dickens’ most important books was published in parts over the first five volumes of the Miscellany, under his pseudonym of ‘Boz’. Besides Oliver Twist, the following pieces were published by Dickens in the first four volumes: Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble, Stray Chapters: The Pantimime of Life / Particulars concerning a Lion, The Mudfog Association for the Advancement of Everything & Full Report of the Second Meetingof the Mudfog Association for the Advancement of Everything. The Oliver Twist installments are illustrated by George Cruikshank.
