Bellingham, An Alphabet of Irish Saints.
Bellingham, Henry / Hyde, Douglas / Dease, Charlotte / “Torna” / Rooney, Lucas (Illustrations). An Alphabet of Irish Saints. [First Edition]. Dundalk, The Dundalkan Press, 1916. 24 x 18.5 cm. Title plus 46 unnumbered pages. Original brown decorated stiff paper boards. Soft covers. Originally stapled, now bound with binders string. Very good condition. Binding rubbed, bumped and locally faded on front board (see images). Original staples corroded away leaving some brown stains on some pages (see images). Original entry form to participate in painting competition tipped in. Entry form was filled by a Dublin based child. Small frail label with name and address of same child losely inserted. Internally a little dust dulled and occassionally mildy foxed. All drawings have been expertly hand-coloured. A scarce and wonderful children’s book. Every copy of this soft cover book was issued with an invitation to participate in a painting competition for children (two age groups). Judging took place after March 17, 1916 (deadline for submission) by Lady Butler, Mr. George Russell (A.E.) and Major Gerald Dease. Each entry form had to be certified by a clergyman. The form in this book was filled by ‘Una Carew Meredith’ and certified by a clergyman in Dundrum, Co. Dublin.
